Bolder Boulder
Over Memorial day weekend we traveled to Colorado to visit family and run in the much anticipated Bolder Boulder.
We were hoping to fly over but never could get on a flight (standby) out and worried about making it back on such a busy weekend that we decided at the very last minute to drive. I have to be honest for some very very odd reason that drive feels like eternity to me. It is about an 8 hour drive but feels more like 20. I've yet to figure out why???
As we pulled in late Friday night I was actually pretty amazed at how well both kids did, it was mom that had the hard time!
We had a blast exploring all the creatures and such that Longmont has to offer. Both kids were very entertained. There was never a struggle with bedtime and it only took them seconds to fall asleep when their heads hit the pillow.
Sunday we spent some extra time crawdad hunting and eating. Yes eating! Who'd a thought! Carter, Glen, Susan, and Eric all were brave enough to try the yucky little creatures. Eric was very very thorough in cleaning them before they actually boiled them. I personally felt bad for the little guys.
After our dinner of crawdads and spaghetti (pre-race carbs) Susan made us some yummy pazookies! We each had to pick a partner to share our dessert with. I am not sure Grandpa made the best decision as Bess is quite the little sweet eater!
Monday morning rolled around rather early! Glen was very well prepared for this race. He was very structured in keeping up with his running schedule to make sure he finished in the time he wanted.
When we signed up for the race, Glen and I signed up to start at the same time. I convinced Eric and Hannah that they could run the whole thing and to sign up with us. The race workers wouldn't allow them to change to our heat so I moved down with them so we could try running together.
Glen started about 30 minutes before we did and had to wait in the stadium for us to arrive. As Eric, Hannah, and I started the race, they both took off way too fast for me. I have to pace myself and keep with that pace otherwise I'll hit a wall. At about 1.5 I noticed Hannah and Eric up ahead. I think they hit their brick wall! I passed them and never did see them again until we met in the stadium. Funny thing is they only finished 4 minutes after me. They were "the champs." I wish I were young again!
Glen had a goal of finishing the race under an hour. He finished at 59 mins. Goal accomplished! I finished at 1 hour and 10 mins. Susan and her friend also walked the race and met all the rest of us there at the stadium.
After the race was over they did a little program there in the Stadium. The program ended at noon. At 12:01 it started pouring, actually raining buckets! We found a tree to take coverage while we tried to decide where to meet Mike and the kids for our ride home. The tree started to leak so we decided we would need to take a different route. While in the bathroom I noticed some unused garbage bags that could fit two people. We paired up and walked out of the stadium for probably another mile or two to meet Mike.
It was a very fun experience and I am very glad we took the opportunity to do it.
Glen is now trying to convince me into running a half marathon with him. Crazy thing is the whole 8 years we've been married I've begged him to run with me and he always said, "I am not a runner, I can't run." Now look at him! He's totally killing me!
Thanks for the fun weekend full of entertainment guys!

Good for you guys! I knew you'd be fine, Kendi, but to be honest, I'm surprised that Glen has decided to be a runner. When he was young, he was always great at sports, especially baseball, but never did like to run much. Way to go!
The photos are great. Carter is in heaven when he can find a few "critters." You've also very brave to actually try eating those crawdads. I imagine they must have been pretty "mud-flavored," - - -like trout that come from a muddy reservoir. Glad it was you! :)
Love you all.
Always,
Mom/Gram
You could totally do a half marathon! How I miss the days I was in running shape!
You are my hero right now! I totally wish I could run! Yeah I know if I put in the time and effort - ha ha
Seriously - GREAT JOB!! Sounds like it was so much fun to do that with family!!
You guys are so cute! I would love to have ran that with you guys. I have always wanted to do some sort of a marathon. Your kids are getting so big! They are so adorable. I know i always say that, but they really are! Susan said she had alot of fun with you guys there. We need to get together soon! The reunion will be really fun!
The race was SO fun. I never thought those words would come out of my mouth about running. Since the Bolder Boulder, I've begun a half marathon training schedule, but my knees are telling me NO. I'm sure I could do it, but I'm not sure it's worth it on my joints. Some doctors have said that running more than 6 miles at a time over an extended period does more harm than good. I tend to believe that. I would like to keep running short distances but I'm not so sure about the half. The cool thing is that I've noticed that I have more energy throughout the day and I don't feel stressed so much. Before I started running, I had high blood pressure - now it's normal. Yeah!
The kids had a lot of fun on the trip. They love going on little adventures, even if it's just catching frogs and crawdads, or watching baby geese. Thanks Papa and Nana Sue for a good time!
Glen
Good job running the race!!
Looks like you all had a great weekend!! The reunion should be fun!
I loved your description of the race and the discovery of Longmont's creatures. I love the picture of Bess and Papa eating desserts together, and all of you getting ready for the race. If you do a half marathon, I'll be doubly impressed! I have a hard time with that Wyoming drive too - it seems long! We'll know the definition of "long" this summer!
Enjoy the wedding this weekend!
Love,
Melecia
I liked reading all the comments. The pictures were great, especially Carter's lost tooth, and both children's animation with the poor little critters. They were really cute with Molly and Daisy too. It is so much fun being a grand parent! I've driven across Wyoming a hundred times, and it always seems easier when I know what awaits me at the end of the trip.....well worth it.
I'm leary too, Glen, the effects of long distance running has on knees, especially on bigger people. I feel safer swimming and going for long walks. A doctor friend told me walking has the same positive cardio effect that running does.
We look forward to more fun stuff at Bear Lake. Susan looked at the Serendipity home while she was coming home from Utah. She and Hannah said it is perfect for our family, lots of room in a new home on a hill overlooking the blue green water of Bear Lake.
Love you lots,
Dad/Papa
